Introduction to Giant Panda Reserves in Sichuan

Anzihe Nature Reserve 
Established in 1993 by Sichuan Province to protect giant panda and it's habitat. Located at Chongzhou, 104KM from Chengdu about 2.5 hours drive, covers about 10100 hectares, elevation around 2500M average, and locate between east longitude of 103º7´- 103º17´ and north latitude of 30º43´- 30º51´, there estimated 8 wild giant pandas living in this reserve. 
And this reserve play a important role in linking Wolong nature reserve, Fengtongzhai nature reserve and Heishuihe nature reserve as a big region for panda living and exchange freely in Qionglai Mountains.

 

Baiyang Nature Reserve
Established in 1993 to protect rare wild animals such as giant panda and eco-forest system with area of 76710 hectares, at elevation between 1080M and 5588M, locate at Jin'an town, Songpan county, locate between east longitude of 103º48´- 104º15´ and north latitude of 32º7´- 32º26´, links Huanglong reserve, Si'er nature reserve, Wanglang reserve and Piankou reserve in Beichuan county. Scenery is very attractive in mountains, river, temples and and valleies. There living Qiang people and Tibetan with attractive  folklores. Scientific researching going on a little due to lack of money in this reserve. 

 

Dafengding Nature Reserve
The giant panda is the main beneficiary of this protection. This area borders the Heizhugou Valley, 800 -  4042   meters hight, It is full of exotic species (more than 50) , many of which can only be found in China. Located in ethnic minorities area, established in 1979,  30164 hectares, covers 2 counties: Mabian & Meigu, locate between east longitude of 103º14´- 103º24´ and north latitude of 28º25'- 28º44´, average temperature 9º all year round,  250km to Xichang, about over 30 giant pandas living there.

 

Fengtongzhai Nature Reserve
National Reserve, established in 1975. In mountains & valley area of 39000 hectares reserved, located at Baoxing county, between east longitude of 102º48´- 102º47´ and north latitude of 30º19´- 30º20´, total animals about 380 species, 395 kinds of plants in this area. There are 7 conservative portions in this reserve. about 250Km from Chengdu. Now there are 4 captive giant pandas. In it's history, the Preserve has ever treated and cured 23 giant pandas, and 20 of them alive. For these pandas, 12 of them sent to other places (country) as gift by China Government, 8 of them placed back to wild condition (their real family).

 

Gonggar National Nature Reserve
Established in 1996 protect primitive forests, rare animals & modern glacier, covers area of 400000 hectares, location covers three counties of Kangding, Luding and Shimian. 

 

Heizhugou Valley
Surrounded by primitive forest at the fringe of  the Sichuan Basin, 3500 meters high. Legend has it that people and animals often disappear without a trace from this valley ,attributable to the pyramids of Egypt and the Bermuda Triangle.

 

Labahe

Labahe Nature Reserve established in 1963, covers area of 23872 hectare, ranging mountain & valley at elevation from 1050 to 5010M, and locate between east longitude of 102º17´- 102º33´ and north latitude of 30º4´- 30º20´, with 18 species of national  rare plants and many kind of animals such as giant panda and lessen panda as well as 164 kinds of birds. 

 

Longxi-Hongkou 

Longxi-HongkouNational Nature Reserve, 100KM from Chengdu, located on the links from Sichuan Basin to Tibet Plateau, altitude from 820--4582meters, covers 34000 hectares of primitive forests and plants, there lives 10-20 wild giant pandas.

 

Piankou Nature Reserve
Loacted in Piankou, Xiaoba and Kaiping town in Beichuan county, north of Sichuan province, at elevation from 1100 to 3320M, between east longitude of 104º20´- 104º26´ and north latitude of 32º02´- 32º12´, 225Km from Chengdu (capital of Sichuan province), with 2700 kinds of wild plants, include some rare plants, also many rare animals such as giant panda, and many Chinese Medicine there, it's a natural gene pool. 

 

Qianfoshan Natural Reserve
Located in the mountaintop between An Xi'an county and Beichuan county, with it's 2 portions, north of Chengdu. 17740 hectares area, established as a nature reserve in 1993. 15 giant pandas there living estimated.

 

Si'er Nature Reserve
Located Tibetan village in Pingwu county, no people live in reserved ares, covers 29790 hectares at elevation from 1600 to 4828M, with primitive forests system in various  plants and mammals such as giant panda, and between east longitude of 103º53´- 104º10´ and north latitude of 32º15´- 32º31´, rare animals about 50 species and 30 national key plants there.

 

Siguniangshan Nature Reserve
Established in 1995, to protect wild animals and mountain's eco-system, covers 48500 hectares. Located in Xiaojin County.

 

Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve
This reserve established in 1978 to protect wild animals such as giant panda and primitive forests, located in mountains, rivers and valleys at elevation from 1150 to 3864M, and between east longitude of 104º36´- 104º53´ and north latitude of 32º32´- 32º41´, with many rare animals, about 200 kinds of birds and 19 species of reptiles. 

 

Xiaozhaizigou Nature Reserve
Xiaozhaizigou, means small village valley, established in 1979, covers 44391.2 hectares, to protect wild animals and primitive forests, between Baiyang Nature reserve (north) and Baodinggou reserve (south), is a very important area to link habitats of giant panda in Minshan Mountains. Locate between east longitude of 103º45´- 104º10´ and north latitude of 31º50´- 32º10´, southward about 73Km to Mianyang city, 93km to Baichuan county, and from Mianyang to Chengdu about 162Km. There are 13 kinds of rare plants and national conservative key animals 40 species. 
About over 70 giant pandas living there. And patrol 10days one time, and 10 times a year.

 

Yele Nature Reserve
Yele is a young reserve, located in the Xiangling Shan in Mianning county and supporting the 2nd southern- most population of giant pandas, was established in 1993.
