Captive pandas and bred pandas who had been released
to the wild in the past years.
1983, Zhenzhen, captured, released to the own habitat area at Wolong.
1984, Huahua, captured, released to the own habitat area at Wolong.
1984, Beibei, captured, released to the same area at Wolong. But died 2
months after releasing.
1985, Xixi, captured, released to the same area at Qingchuan.
1991, Sanshan, captured, released to the same area at Wolong. But weight
lossed 25 km after 4 months.
1994, Baixue, captured at Qinling, and raised at Suzhou but escaped to the
wild at Suzhou. And weight lossed 11 km for 3 months after escaping, then

To better proserve the rare giant panda,
China started a project of Wilderness Training and Return to the Wild,
this project 1st took in Wolong in 2003. Wolong's panda protection will focus on
training in the wilderness. Through this project, scientists attempt to
increase pandas' ability for survival in the wild so as to make it possible for them to
return to wild nature forests. The whole project will cost several hundred millions of
yuan.
After wildness training, panda will learn how to
survive by himself, the wildness will be fully exposed, he or she will has
the awareness of occupying a territory. Just like other wild pandas, the
panda will try hard to guard his own territory.
In the the training period, without any contact from humans except his
keepers and veterinarians, and try to arrange wild-born-panda to be trained,
so that no any close contact to any other people. And the keeper /
veterinarians will in panda cloth or panda costumes if need to close to the
trained panda. Keep the wild-born-panda stey by stey training and live in
the wild for future released to the wild.
The best time for trained panda paby to learn to live or survive in the wild
is between the ages of six months and 18 months.
The requirement of Wildness Training Enclosure Yard
(Gound, wild enclosure)
The better is in panda habitat area; Build wildness training enclosure
(small and larger size); with panda raising / feeding facility; panda
research and raising staff.
In Wolong, two training enclosures (pened yard) built in 2003, at the
easternsouth of Wolong nature reserve. 1st training enclosure with 2 yards
connected with a smaal door, one size as 15000 ㎡,
and another size 27000 ㎡; the 2nd training ground
(enclosure, pened area / yard) with 3 yards together but seperately, each
with area size of 240000㎡ and 80000㎡ . The altitude range are 2100 -
2440 m, the slope are 20 - 30 °, annual average temperature is 15 °C,
average low 4.77 °C, average temperature in Jan 6.45 °C (low) and 12.7 °C
(high). The humid above 95%.
With the plants and tress as: Juglans cathayensie, Rhus punjiabensis
var.sinica, Pterocarya insignis, Cercidiphy japonicum, Acer flabellatum,
A.oliverianum, Acer mono var.maeroprerum, Prunus brachypoda Var.seudossiori,
Sophora japonica,
Yushania bravipaniculata. It is the best panda
habitat area with food and enviornment.
The background and history of Wildness Training
project.
1996, It is 1st set up an idea (program, project) by Wolong Research Center
that Wildness Training Panda to Release Return to the wild.
1997, The International Conference for the Possiblity of Captive-raised
Panda Released to the Wild held in Wolong in Sep 1997.
1999, The International Conference of Captive Panda Breeding and Panda
Releasing Technique held in Wolong .
2003, Xiang Xiang released to the wild.
2003, The International Conference for Captive-raised Panda Released to the
Wild held in Wolong in Nov.
2005, Plan & Discussion Conference held on 07Aug in Wolong, and dicided that
Releasing Xiang Xiang to the wild nature.
2008, Conference of 2nd Term Releasing Panda to the Wild held by Wolong
Research Center in Dujiangyan city.
2009, Conference of Captive Panda Wildness Training and Panda Releasing
Technique held in Dujiangyan.
2010, Discussion and Training for 2nd Term project on 20Jun in
Dujiangyan.
2010, 2nd term (2nd phase) project started on 20Jul, CCRCGP transfered 4
female mated pandas (Cao cao, Zizhu, Yingping, Zhangka, aged 8 - 12
years old female pandas) from
Bifengxia to Wolong Heitaoping Wild Training Base (situated
1,800 meters above sea level.) for wild training.
2011, 21May, "the 3rd Expert Conference of 2nd Phase Wild Training Panda"
held by Wolong Center at Dujiangyan, plan to select 6 fertilized female
pandas for wild training.
2011, Nov, new 6 pandas were delivered to the semi-wild training center at
Hetaoping, Zhangka and her cub, Jinzhu and her cub,
Xixi and her cub. With Cao cao and Taotao, now total about 8 pandas.
Plan aim and schedule of Wildness Training Program.
Captive raised panda selection for wild training and releasing. Per the body
health condition, age, sex, and behaivour ability, genic information, the
best panda will be selected into training enclosure for wild / releaseing
training. Wild training 3 step, step by step as environment access, survive
ability, futher survive abaility. After 3 steps training, the training panda
ages about 6.7 yearls old, then select the best of them to be released to
the wild.
Captive-bred and captive-born cub be trained with mother together for
release to the wild. Once the cub was one month old, let mother panda
with her cub to the wildness training enclosure for training and learning
survive / live skills in the wild. The panda baby (the cub) once was 2.5
years old, then the baby panda will be placed into the wild enclosure even
to the wild nature. The cub will be trained wild 21-23 months.
Captive panda but wild-born cub be trained with mother together for
wildness. Female panda will be released into the wild enclosure after 3
months of pregnancy, and the cub will be trained in the wild with
mother for about 22-24 months.
Plan to take 1-2 mother pandas into 1st step wild
training enclosure for cub birth in 2010
Plan to take new-born cub into 2nd step wildness training enclosure (larger,
more nature) in 2011 for training one year, without any man-made foods for
them.
Seperat the trained baby panda and mother for 0.5 years training, to train
the baby panda in individual live / survivie ability in 2012, then selcet
one female baby panda for releasing to the wild.
The reason for panda mother with her cub
wildness training
The basic is, the baby panda will learn many live and survive skills from
mother wild live together in the wild training enclosure.
Future
aim.
Build one nature-enclosure which covers an area of 3 sq km, and select 2 sub
pandas (above 3 years, one male, and one female) to be placed into the
enclousre for low-human-affects raising. After 3-4 years old training
survive skills in this enclosure, then release to a selected area for
releasing. The number of males and females to be released are matched
rationally and they will be arranged with some rare accompanying species
including the red panda. |
