Hua Mei (aged 5), the panda born on 21Aug 1999 in San Diego Zoo, USA, and
returned Wolong on 13Feb 2004, gave birth to twins in Wolong at 19:45
(1st) and 20:22 (2nd), one male weight 157 grams, and another weight
130.5 grams.

3rd census on panda population (lasted about 5yesrs) launched in Aug shows
that there are 1590 wild pandas (aged over 1.5 years old), and raised panda
161, total pandas at least 1750 over the world.
But in 1988, the 2nd survey on panda population population investigation
showed were 1110 wild pandas, so 480 wild pandas increased by.
And in China total about 40 protection area involved panda preserves, and
most of them locate in Sichuan. 27 of them in specially panda reserves,
protect 32 counties.
It be sure that about 95% giant panda in the wild under protection. On the
other hand, at least 90% of the artifically bred baby pandas have survived.

As to breeding of giant panda, some problem not to be overcomed, so till now
no successful example in full IVF-ET for panda, but only succeed
in AIH (ariificial insemination with husband'sperm) for panda and most of
AIH female panda give birth 2 cubs.

In Chengdu will set up a giant panda ecological garden basis of the Giant
Panda Breedign & Researching Base of Chengdu, and this garden will play
important role in returning giant panda to the wild.
